Chess in Katowice and the cities around it

Chess around Katowice runs on a crowded tournament calendar shared by neighbouring cities. The Grzybowice culture centre in Zabrze and the halls of Czeladź hold a series in almost every season, Sosnowiec plays in community rooms, a seniors’ club and an eatery in Niwka, and Gliwice, Tarnowskie Góry and Tychy keep yearly opens. Weekly training happens in youth culture centres and club rooms, from Szopienice to Jaworzno.

Chess960 near Katowice

No over-the-board Chess960 event has turned up in Katowice or its neighbouring cities. The Silesian tournament calendar since October 2024 carries Fischer random in the titles of events in Żory, Knurów, Skrbeńsko, Węgierska Górka and Gołkowice, and in Kleszczów near Gliwice, all of them outside the area this directory covers; the latest dates the calendar gives for them fall in August 2026.

Chess960 draws the order of the pieces behind the pawns from 960 possible set-ups before each game, so memorised openings lose their weight and both sides think for themselves from the first move. With no local board for it yet, it can be played online at ch960.com.

No Chess960 game at a board in Katowice or a neighbouring city has turned up in the pages consulted.

How entries are ordered and marked

The directory holds 80 entries, 80 of them current or awaiting a newer trace, for Katowice and the neighbouring cities of the conurbation. They rest on the Polish Chess Federation register, the Silesian Chess Association, the FIDE list of rated tournaments, the ChessArbiter tournament pages and the own sites of clubs and culture centres, consulted from to .

Inside each list the freshest dated trace leads, and nothing is scored, ranked or promoted. Where no page states a fee, an hour or who may take part, the entry shows “not stated by sources” and leaves it there. Source marks, the two status lines and the edge of the covered area are explained on where the entries come from.

Missing a club, a hall or a series?

Club timetables across the conurbation change with every school year, tournaments move between culture centres, school halls and cafés, and new series start without much notice. If an entry has fallen behind, or something in Katowice or a neighbouring city is not here yet, send a short note with a link that shows it.
